HONG KONG (AP) — Asian shares were higher Monday after Wall Street closed its third straight winning week with a tiny gain. U.S. futures were lower while oil prices gained as investors looking ahead to OPEC plus meetings. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.1% higher to 7,058.40. The Dow Jones Industrial Average inched up less than 0.1% to 34,947.28 and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.1% to 14,125.48. It had been trading near 152 yen to the dollar last week, but analysts said expectations for lower U.S. interest rates are driving sales of dollars, pushing the yen higher.

Paris/London CNN —Two of the largest retail chains in France have announced they will forego all profit on fuel sales, yielding to government pressure to sell gasoline and diesel at cost. “From September 29, the 750 service stations of Leclerc hypermarkets will be selling petrol ‘at cost price’ every day. This, of course, means with no profit,” Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president of the E. Leclerc group, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday. Making zero or very little profit on fuel sales may be new for French retailers but their US counterparts have been doing it for years. Gasoline sales at the warehouse clubs are an important part of their business and draw customers inside.

The unflinching resilience of the US labor market is one of — if not the — greatest source of tension in today’s economy. That means the Fed’s already painful rate hikes are likely to continue until the job market simmers. In just one year, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates from nearly zero to a range of 4.5% to 4.75% to cool the economy. The labor market is stronger than ever: The US added a shocking 517,000 jobs in January and knocked unemployment down to its lowest level since 1969. If the labor market remains strong, more Fed-induced pain lies ahead.
Slumping markets have investors pulling back from funding startups that make internet-connected devices for retailers, threatening to choke an innovation pipeline for emerging tools like smart shopping carts and inventory management robots. Total venture-capital funding for startups developing IoT technology specifically for retailers is on pace to drop 65.1% from 2021 to $188.2 million by the end of the year—one of the hardest hit subsectors in the IoT market, the firm said. Like most commercial software applications, connected devices in recent years have become an integral part of retailers’ day-to-day operations. He said the company would continue to invest in these and other tech tools that help customers, despite tougher economic conditions. IoT technology is critical for the food company, Mr. Basu said, because it also enables Goya to implement cybersecurity projects in its plants.
Beyond a slew of retail earnings reports, the government will report retail sales figures for October on Wednesday. But the most recent Consumer Price Index figures for October provided some relief for shoppers…and Wall Street. Consumer spending rose 1.4% during the third quarter, according to the government’s most recent gross domestic product (GDP) report. A report on housing starts and building permits data for October will come out towards the end of this week. When Home Depot reported its most recent earnings in August, it noted that customers didn’t make as many purchases as they did a year ago.
The Discover it® Cash Back credit card features a rotating set of bonus categories that earn 5% cash back, up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter. The rotating categories on the Discover it Cash Back card for the second quarter of 2023 — which runs from April 1 to June 30 — are restaurants and wholesale clubs. Keep in mind that while BJ’s Wholesale Club and Sam’s Club accept Discover credit cards both in-store and online, Costco Wholesale only accepts Discover credit cards for online purchases. Since the Discover rotating bonus categories are capped at $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter, card holders can earn up to $75 in quarterly bonus cash back just by enrolling in the categories each quarter, and then making sure to use their Discover card at the right merchants. That turns the 5% cash back categories into 10% cash back categories for year one.
